What The Pros Are Actually Putting With These Days
I spent way too much time last weekend watching the final round instead of actually playing golf. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I couldn't stop staring at Scottie Scheffler's putter. That TaylorMade Spider Tour X he wields is basically golf pornography—sleek lines, perfect balance, and that distinctive design that screams "you can't afford me."
The rabbit hole got deeper from there. Rory McIlroy's putting style fascinates me. His TaylorMade Spider X Hydro Blast with a clear alignment system seems perfectly aligned with his technical approach. The way the ball rolls off that face is something I've rewound and watched in slow motion more times than I'd like to admit.
Collin Morikawa's compact stroke with his TaylorMade TP Soto tells you everything about his personality. Understated, reliable, and absolutely lethal when it counts. The clean blade design gives him that distance control we all pretend we have after three beers at the 19th hole.
I played with a guy last month who swore by his Ping putter—similar to what Viktor Hovland uses. He three-putted seven times that round, proving equipment only gets you so far.
The biggest surprise has to be Tony Finau's switch to a Ping PLD Anser 2D. For a guy with such power off the tee, his choice of a classic blade design seems almost contradictory. But his improved putting stats clearly show something's working right.
My buddy Dave dropped $400 on a Scotty last year and still couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. Meanwhile, Peter in our Thursday league uses a 30-year-old Ping Anser he found at a garage sale and consistently shoots under 80.
The moral? Find what works for you. Just don't blame me when you're explaining the credit card bill to your spouse.
